Jessie Laidlay Weston (1850–1928) was an independent scholar and folklorist, working mainly on mediaeval Arthurian texts. In 1901 she published The Legend of Sir Lancelot Du Lac: Studies Upon Its Origin, Development, and Position in the Arthurian Romantic Cycle, in which she dismissed the love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere as “artificial, not natural;” containing “no touch of genuine passion or self-abandonment” – adding, in response to contemporary critical comments, that it was a “sham”.
However, the following year there appeared an appendix to that study, in which she first broaches a subject which would increasingly dominate her scholarly approach and affect her posthumous reputation.
