John Buchan (1st Baron Tweedsmuir; 1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist and public servant who combined a successful career as an author of thrillers, historical novels, histories and biographies with a parallel career in public life. At the time of his death he was Governor-General of Canada. The Blanket of the Dark is an historical adventure set in Tudor England. Peter Pentecost, a clerk in a medieval abbey near Oxford, learns that he, not Henry VIII, is the true heir to the throne and finds himself being manipulated by various factions in a bid to overthrow the monarch. First published in 1931, this novel was later published in 1939, in A Five-Fold Salute to Adventure: An Omnibus Volume of the Historical Novels of John Buchan. (Sources: Wikipedia, Goodreads)
